Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is sincerely not a fan of cars that are smuggled into his country. So much, in fact, that he’s decided to crush about $5.5 million worth of cars during a recent showing of destruction. The illegal cars were grouped up in Sta Ana, Cagayan, in northern Philippines while Duterte watched on with a hard-hat on. Cars involved in the crushing included Lamborghinis, Porsches, BMWs, motorcycles and many more. There were a total of 800 cars and motorcycles that were seized by port authorities in Cagayan and these were just a small selection of them. The cars were run over by a bulldozer, monster truck rally-style, resulting in the utter destruction of each vehicle. Duterte states during a speech before the crushing that he would not be able to end the smuggling of these cars and corruption, but by crushing these cars he’s sending a message to those who look to break the laws of his country.
We may live to see a future where gas-powered cars are only shown at historic events. That’s because Audi has teased us with their latest e-tron concept. The PB18 e-tron is named for Pebble Beach, and it will make its debut at “The Quail” on the evening of August 24. It will also be on display at Laguna Seca the following day, with the culmination being on Sunday on the lawn at Pebble Beach.
It looks to have similar proportions to its cousin, the VW I.D. R Pike’s Peak, but Audi chose their Malibu Design Loft to finalize the exterior. It could also be the production version of the e-tron Vision Gran Turismo. Either way, it will be shocking!
Welcome everybody to the first weekend drive of 2018I’m Mike Martinez joined as always by Mike Whalen happy new year 2018 that it’s just so weirdIt’s your flu by fasting. We got another one ahead of us, and if you guys are anything like usYou’ve probably already broken your New Year’s resolution, so we’re not gonna even talk about thatBut we do want to talk about or a few predictions. We have for the coming yearWell crossover is out cell passenger cars can Tesla mass produced the model 3And what about Robo cars maybe road-ready this year? No one knows for sure, but we’re taking our best guesses IDid not break any 2018 resolutions because I didn’t make anyBut I do have my first prediction for the year, and you know what it kind of seems like it has already happenedBut it hasn’t I predict crossovers will outsell passenger carsIt kind of seems like it has because when we talk about sales we talk about light duty trucks and light duty carsBut the light duty trucks a lot of times have vans or possibly evencrossovers or SUVs in them depending how you characterize it andSince the 50/50 split of light duty truck and light duty passenger cars in 2013We’re now in the high 60s for truckBut the cars are still selling more than the cross of cross overs overall for the industryAnd I really think that’s gonna kind of flip-flop this year seems like this has been kind of a slowTidal wave that’s been coming for years right the emergence of SUVs and crossoversAnd it seems like that momentum continues to build and you know Mike as I always say. There’s no Menem like momentumYou look at this thoughthe Toyota rav4 in the Nissan Rogue for the first time in the history of car sales sold over the400,000 unit mark and then you have vehicles like the escapethe Explorerothercrossovers and100,000 and GM cross those offcrossovers hit about nine hundred and sixty-five thousand this year well 2017Sorry and cars were at seven hundred nine thousand. I mean that is a pretty big gap now compared toCars leading last year and you look at even some of the individual races right the rav4 overtaking the CamryFor its fusion and focus of giving way to the escape and explore so individually it’s starting to happen I agree with youI think that’s a good prediction for 2018. I’m glad you agree with me. What’s yours well?I don’t know if you’ll agree with me on this, but my first prediction Lincoln’s that LincolnOh, yeah, he’s gonna. Have a bounce-back year surprisinglyWe’ve talked a lot about Lincoln latelyAnd I’ve kind of talked about some of the growth that they’ve experiencedSurprisingly, they didn’t experience growth and the sales chart in the USI was gonna say I’ve got the sales right here for Lincoln and everyone else andLincoln was down0. 5. Percent for the 12 months I mean there’s nowhere to go but up for them still that would be my argument for yoursBox back year they will see some salesIncreases in the US because you have the first full year of navigator sales if you look at navigator individually inDecember it was up 30% well every other nameplate was down pretty significantlyYou’re having the refreshed, and KC which is an important segment for them coming backAnd you have the artist formerly known as the MKX the Nautilus coming next year later in the year 10 you have metalMcConaughey talking to animals right wellI’m not quite in this oneThat was a new level hold what what’s the new ones so if you guys haven’t seen it yetI really recommend you check out the new navigator ad where Matthew McConaughey is basically conducting an orchestra in his new navigatorHe summons a train. He’s tapping on some bongos. It’s it sounds likeIt sounds like a party that IWill put it that way?Okay, speaking of partying. Let’s move into another prediction that has kind of been playing out all of2017 IThink there are gonna. Be more indictments and charges coming in the uaw FCA training center scandalWe’ve been following this four people have been formally chargedSeveral others were unnamed in the indictment, and we’ve seen a lot of moves from the Union as well as a few things happening thatWe don’t know what it means yetBut I think a lot of that is going to come to fruition in2018 not a great look for the Union and although I will say Mikewith this story Montblanc pensWere in the news I was kind of hoping for one for ChristmasBut uh, maybe your gift to me is still in the mail because I didn’t get one yetno, I didn’t get you anything, and I definitely not $2,000 worth or a$2,000 or more shotgun, which I think or jewel the VP who was retiring and retired on December 31st?reportedly received gave the money back, but that still didn’t save him from wanting to retire andthe UAW nominate in someone else’s placeI mean that story just keeps widening the feds are looking into the GM and for training centersWe don’t know what’s gonna happen. Well that andStick with federal indictments and different things. There’s a lot of still federal IDon’t want say pros, but just different things going on Fiat ChryslerAnd what we’ve seen over the last couple years that have them come to a conclusion yetSo we’ll see what happens with that. I think this year, too. I’ll give you another prediction. I think somebodyMajor or minor automaker it doesn’t matterSome sort of automaker will bow out of the autonomous vehicle race in2018 whether that means scaling back their plans or just getting out of it altogetherListen I think Sergio at FCA got it right when he decided to kind of pull back and say listeneverybody’s chasing wait-and-see approachKind of we’re gonna wait until somebody develops this we’re gonna buy it off the shelf and just throw the system in our vehiclesWell let them do all the hard work, and then when they prove that it’s profitableAnd it works safely well buy it off and one of his arguments has has been if the autonomous vehicle workshow it shouldYou shouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them exactly why people tell the difference between the ride a little bitbut if they work how they shouldEverybody’s chasing the same that algorithm. I I’m not sure it’s the best idea, and then you have suppliers like DelphiNow active that are doing good work with folks like blackberry and lyft a partnership. They just announced recently for CESnext week thatYou know they’re gonna be offering free autonomous lift rides thereSo they’re doing the work you have a million won automakers doing it, too. I I don’t know I think you just need toPare down a little bit and see what happens speaking of a million-in-one, automaker’s, thank you for that lead-in mic my last prediction isv’s will remain a tiny fraction of Industry salesAnd we see so many automakers in general announcing Grainger plans2018 might be the year of PR releases and just what they’re going to doBut the sales aren’t going to be there and that also includes Tesla, which will remain a niche player and notNot hit its targets. You don’t think Elon is gonna deliver with the model 3. I do not, but Eevee’s Tesla and just theThere’s such a small segment right now that they should be grouped into oneYeahI think you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody to take the bet to say that V’s are gonna explode in popularity or that Tesla willMeet its goalsAnd you guys know that we’ve kind of hit them pretty hard in in recent weeks and as a schlub prediction the Tesla semiWhich I believe is supposed to come out as the early is 2019? We’ll be delightedI’ll take that bet allRight Mike my last prediction here. Is that nothing is gonna change when it comes to pick up truck WarsThey’re escalating here in 2018 and there’s a lot of news thatAbout to be flooding the blogosphere in the internetYou have a new Silverado you have the new Ram 1500 you have Ford diesel you have Ford Ranger presumably coming later this year, butAt the end of the day, I don’t think it’s gonna change anything. I think byJanuary 1st 2019 we’re gonna be talking about how f-series isAmerica’s best selling truck for the 40 second straight year how GM is in second placeAnd how FCA is in third place the same as it has been for a while you know?I don’t necessarily disagree with you because when you’re gonna have RAM coming online supposedly this monthMaybe going into next ramping up and you have GMMaybe mid year with its pickupsnot much is gonna change people gonna be waiting for those new models, and Chevy as well asRAM are planning to produce their current andContinue them for an unspecified amount of time, and I’m blue the seer is in there too, so I agree with youI don’t think too much is gonna changeBut you know I think there’s gonna be a warFor number two this year for full-size there might be I will say that I do thinkf-series is pretty safe becauseYou know whether we’re talkingcarbon-fiber composite beds or you know new grilles on the RAM or whatever new innovations, they have cookingI’m not sure if it’s gonna be enough to dethrone the f-series while that’s doing wellThey’re adding more features smaller features to it, but still I think they’ll be enough well, and we keep calling or warBut honestly this is my 2018 is just another battlebecause the war is gonna beContinued to go on and a lot of those things that you mentioned some of the innovations are expected to be kind of a tieredlaunchWhere they’ll continue to innovate the truck even if it’s not necessarily a mid-year refresh?Which we saw Ford do over so it tends to be transmission and different little redesigns that they did so I think the full-sizeIt’s gonna be fun to cover. It’s gonna be fun to watch and one for the desertAre we kind of looking crazy good stuff for consumers?Whether you’re a fan of Ford or GM or FCA you’re gonna have some pretty good options next year now you mentioned the Ranger really?Quick what about the midsize pickups how much do you think Ford is gonna come in at least?Toward the end the year in 2018 can they overtake GM overall for pickup sales, let’s say in2019 I don’t know that the Ranger I think the Rangers justessentially a play for a very hot segment that you want to get something out ofYou’re not looking to be the leader you’re not looking to dominate salesYou just want to get some piece of that pie because you throw anything in that segment, it’s gonna sellI don’t know anymore. I think they might be a little bit too late, butWe’ll have to wait and see like everything else there you goAlright, Mike. You know what we haven’t done in a whileMailbag segments, that’s true. We serve some great questions from last time, but we need more that’s right, soFriendly reminder to all of you to email us and weekend drive at crane com answer any and all questions you haveSo until then we’ll see you next week
