Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak Concept: First Look

here at the 2018 New York International Auto Show Volkswagen has dropped abombshell on us it’s this a surprise concept this is the Volkswagen AtlasTanoak concept it’s a five passenger crew cab mid-sized pickup truck based on theAtlas platform which is their big 7 passenger SUV now it’s not confirmed forproduction Volkswagen is still kind of gauging reaction to see if they couldsell something like this which is basically a Honda Ridgeline competitoralthough this really does look like a compelling story let’s take a littlecloser look at what they’ve done here now from the a pillar forward this ispretty much the Volkswagen Atlas it even shares the same powertrainit’s got a 3. 6 liter 276 horsepower v6 underneath connected to an 8-speedautomatic transmission and Volkswagen’s 4motion all-wheel drive now the frontend obviously is a little bit concept you’ve got all these LED light pipeswhich aren’t going to make it into production I’m sure if this thingactually does get built but it sure looks cool on a concept car from thefront doors rearward however this thing is all new it doesn’t share that muchwith the Atlas at all check out what they’ve done for the backdoors the handle is actually concealed in the c-pillar and the interior ispretty nice it’s completely functional in there and well it looks a littleconcept in terms of the touch panels and all of the screens and the lighting thatyou see in there there’s really nothing in here that’s too outrageous inaddition to the rear part of the cabin the bed is also fairly interesting aswell I’ve never done anything quite like thisit’s also got a concept sport bar it rolls back and there are inserts thatcan be inserted and what you’ll do is you’ll be able to put stuff on top ofthis like a sport bar rack which is great for putting things like surfboardsor even kayaks on top inside the tan oak concept which is already kind of unusualthat we’re actually allowed to sit in a concept car you don’t often get to dothat at an Auto Show you’ve got a new generation look for Atlas its restyledfrom what the current Atlas looks like but it’s not out of the realm ofpossibility you’ve got a couple of touch screens you know that may or may notmake it into a production model but you also have the Volkswagen digital cockpitwhich we have seen before on other models if you’re looking for the futureof what the Atlas might look like this is probably a good bet as to what toexpect so will they do it will Volkswagen make a midsize pickup truckbased on the wall an Atlas SUV well there’s a number ofthings that actually would work in the favor of that decision first of all theAtlas is already engineered it can tow 5,000 pounds this one is bigger andwider so it really does make sense in that respect there’s plenty of capacityat the Chattanooga plant where they build the Atlas so it wouldn’t be thatmuch of a problem to put another vehicle down the line but if you want them tobuild it you’re gonna have to let Volkswagen know they haven’t decided yetwhen and if they do make the new Atlas Tanoak you’ll find out all about it on PickupTrucks. com.
